Mike Bell - Time Was

Straight Records was born in 1999 as a banner under which to distribute my first album “Now that they’ve all gone home”.

Its origins were therefore very humble as the album was and remains a very uncomplicated presentation of atmospheric music. It was followed by “Time was”, slightly more jazzy but equally uncomplicated. The label remains true to its origins, still small and uncomplicated but we now have something to be excited about.

Today, more than ever, it is almost impossible to find a record deal even for a highly talented artist, so Straight Records has had to fill the void; we are delighted to have signed Ricardo Vieira

Ricardo is an enormously talented young singer who was first introduced to me here in Luxembourg after he had won a prestigious singing contest.

It became immediately clear that Ricardo was a “song person” (not everybody is), and thus began a three year process of recording and writing.

We finished with well over an album’s worth of material so are in good shape for the second album but the project took various turns.

To begin with it was largely keyboard based but we ended with half the album featuring some wonderful guitar and mandolin playing from Jo Partridge formerly with Steve Harley, Kiki Dee et al, and some mighty powerful guitar playing from my good friend and technical adviser in Brussels, Phil Capon.
The picture was completed by some solid bass playing from Chris Janssen (Wallace Collection) who also features delightfully on fretless on two of the tracks “Don't know where you're going” & “Just another day”.

Ricardo’s album, She do, is available to purchase on iTunes

We wish Ricardo every success.
